Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Hey, blog! It's me again, today, I'll be comparing a short and a full-length film for my research. I'll be examining La Jetée and 12 Monkeys.

I watched a video that compares 12 Monkeys and La Jetée, and it discussed how the feature film naturally extends the short, building on the original ideas. The video also touched on how both films explore the inevitability of certain events. In La Jetée, the short film, the protagonist is caught in a loop, unable to change the outcome. In contrast, 12 Monkeys takes this concept further, with the main character attempting to prevent a catastrophic event. The way time is portrayed in both films is crucial to their themes, and the video highlights how this theme is central to both works. The video also showed me how manipulating time plays a critical role in storytelling. Time travel is a central theme in both films, but La Jetée uses photography to reinforce the unchanging nature of time, while 12 Monkeys builds on this with the ability to alter past events. This taught me that time manipulation not only drives the plot but can also add emotional depth to the story.

The article I read covers a similar comparison. One major takeaway for me was how adapting La Jetée into a full-length film allowed for a deeper exploration of memory and identity. While La Jetée focuses on the implications of time travel using minimal visual language, 12 Monkeys expands on these themes and introduces others, such as mental illness and the nature of memory. The article also discusses the difference in how the protagonists approach time. In La Jetée, the main character is a passive victim of time, while in 12 Monkeys, the protagonist actively tries to change the past. This shift results in a major narrative change. La Jetée emphasizes fate, while 12 Monkeys focuses more on human agency. The article points out that 12 Monkeys follows a more conventional narrative structure compared to the photo montage style of La Jetée.

Another key takeaway from the article was how each film uses its respective medium. The photographs in La Jetée and the film in 12 Monkeys both symbolize the passage of time, with still images conveying stillness and urgency conveyed through motion.

That's it for today's blog! Until next time, Karina logging off.

Production blog: film review

Hey blog! its me again. After officially finishing our video I showed my sister and brother the video to hear open comments on what could be fixed. I first showed my sister. After she watched the video the first thing she mentioned was that in some parts the music should go lower than the other ones because of the setting. For example, in the scene where veronica and the kidnapper have an encounter, she told me to lower the music because it could allow my audience to focus more on the dialogue than the music. Another flaw she pointed out was how fast the texts were disappearing so she told me to fix the timing and maybe make the sizes bigger. Finally the last thing she told me was to change where the dissolve was located because it was too close to the fade. These comments helped me a lot. I then went to my brother and he watched the film. Once again, after he finished watch, the first thing he told me was the music changing volumes for more focus on dialogue. He also mentioned ho...

Planning Blog

Hey blog! it’s me again. BOOM! I am starting the process of creating my first my commercial. First thing that I am going  to do is get my photos. My mom has a whole album of pictures dedicated to each of her kids and their achievements, therefore I will be asking her for the help. For my videos I am going to ask my friends and sisters, they tend to take the most videos of me. I will be also going through my flash drive and camera roll to find photos and videos that show the real me. To find a song that truly fits me, Me and my dog will be listening to a playlist on Spotify of my favorite songs and see which song I sing the most to or describes me in the best way possible. After figuring out my song, I'm going to be filming a video talking about myself, then insert the photos and videos that I have collected. Then I am going to add the music as background just to take the silence away. I will be editing these videos together on Cap Cut, my photos and video...

critical creative reflection

In this music video I have learned a lot from my groupmate's and technology. The process wasnt easy but it was done. In our music video my group and I decided to challenge the conventions. In the genre most of it follows what the song is saying or shows two scenes but goes back and forth. In our music video we made a script in which we acted out what the song felt like for us. One meaning we had of the song was drifting apart from a relationship and learning to let go, the other was realizing your actions and feeling guilt after. An issue this music video represented was jealousy and how it can come over your actions. The girl (maddie) realized that her friend and boyfriend were cheating behind her back and she took action by drowning the girl. A group this video could affect would be jealous people or people who cheat and lead people on. It could help them to understand how their actions can really affect people from the other side and be considerate. This music vid...
